I Believe

I believe we have come upon a proverbial fork in the road where the choices we make now will either plummet us into an ever-darkening decent toward chaos or, if we wake up and act, lead us to the society we proclaim to be the ideal we yearn to achieve. The time has come for us to alter our course. Continuing with the status quo is no longer viable, and will only lead us further into darkness.

Yes, those are dire words. Yes, they invoke imagery that many will challenge as over-dramatized and simply used as an attempt to gain attention. Let us explore, somewhat briefly, a handful of the key points that support such a foreboding tone:

American Rights / Human Rights

“To count by race, to use the means of numerical equality to achieve the end of moral equality, is counterproductive, for to count by race is to deny the end by virtue of the means. The means of race counting will not, cannot, issue in an end where race does not matter.” — William Bennet and Terry Eastland, Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (source)

Until we remove from our vocabulary such ridiculous phrases as “Black Rights,” “African-American Rights,” “Women’s Rights,” “Children’s Rights,” and any other moniker that is not simply Human Rights (or, I suppose, we could continue to use “American” or “Civil”), we will never truly achieve any progress in eliminating racism, bigotry, or whatever term of bias you would like to use. It simply cannot happen. Do you get that? It is impossible to eliminate bias when we introduce it simply by describing some sort of bias in the name. The same holds true for organizations, entertainment, media, clubs, pageants… any introduction of a separate item specifically catering to one group and excluding any other group, by its very nature, perpetuates bias. It is time for change.

Political Agendas and Government Failures

“Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.” — John Adams, from Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations

Our government was founded on a set of ideals that we have effectively destroyed: a government of the people, for the people, by the people. We now have a system of government that is run of the elite, by the elite, for the elite. Further compounding the issue, we now have such a complex and over-reaching governmental “machination” that even those with the best intentions merely become absorbed into the bureaucracy. It is time for change.

Education and Intelligence

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” — Plutarch, from Wikiquote

Our approach to education is far too singularly focused on memorization and attempting to pass national standardized tests. Throughout my entire academic career I found only a couple of classes that attempted to stimulate the mind, and those were merely the result of teachers who understood the concept of true education as opposed to any guidelines or attempts by the institutions to fulfill their true purpose. It is time for change.

Common Sense and the Loss of Innocence

“That’s what it takes to be a hero, a little gem of innocence inside you that makes you want to believe that there still exists a right and wrong, that decency will somehow triumph in the end.” — Lise Hand, quoted in The Truth in Words : Inspiring Quotes for the Reflective Mind (2002)

We live in a constant state of self/socially-induced naiveté. We prefer to think of it as a state of innocence, and yet I can honestly say that we have lost our collective “innocence.” We see right and wrong in action every day and, for the most part, we pretend it doesn’t exist or we look the other way. We see the problems with racism, with the state of human rights, with the actions and inactions of organizations and our government, and we still hold to the misguided notion that someone else will come forward and solve our problems for us. We must act. We must step forward and become the heroes we long so desperately for in these times. It is time for change.

Challenging the Status Quo

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. But the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” — Apple Inc.

There really is nothing to add beyond the idea this quote captures. To borrow another line from the same marketing campaign, the concept is that we must “Think Different” if we are to move forward.

Remarks

I do not believe I have all of the answers. I do not believe any one person has even half of the answers. I do believe, however, that it is time for us to quit sitting idly by and watching our nation, our society, our communities, and in many cases even our own households continue along the slow, downward spiral we find ourselves upon now. It is time for change.

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)

The Honda-Indy Grand Prix of Alabama will not get financial support from the city of Birmingham.

On Tuesday, Mayor William Bell withdrew a request for $300,000 to host and promote the race at the Barber Motorsports Park.

Last week, the council deadlocked on a vote over that request. Councilman Steven Hoyt questioned why a city with a black majority should continue to give money to support the Barber Motorsport track, saying decisions at Barber were not made by anyone who “looked like him.”

Mayor Bell’s office did not comment on the withdrawal.

I want you to reread this line: Councilman Steven Hoyt questioned why a city with a black majority should continue to give money to support the Barber Motorsport track, saying decisions at Barber were not made by anyone who “looked like him.”

Forgetting for a moment that this is an obviously incorrect mindset in the first place, as a white male, if I made that statement I would be immediately branded a racist and become the subject of any number of potential legal actions. I want to ask the following questions:

  • Why has this news been “swept under the rug” instead of being made publicly known to the residents of the area?
  • Why is the councilman still in office when it is obvious there is a mindset that does not align with the duties of the office?

This sparks a lot more that I want to write about, but honestly my first priority is now getting the information out. Please spread the word.

New Levels of Stupidity

There are times when it is quite difficult to determine why people are so ridiculous or seemingly ignorant when looking at the topics that make national headlines. For reference, the following articles sparked this post:

“Sexiness” of Ads and Other Media

First off, I understand the concern that being bombarded by media depicting a specific physical image can cause a number of possible negative feelings in individuals based on their opinion of their appearance compared to the images portrayed. I also understand the idea that media aimed at specific age groups should attempt to depict those age groups in a socially acceptable manner (i.e. you wouldn’t market diapers for young children with a campaign of Victoria’s Secret models wearing said diapers). However, I also understand the idea that parents should be held responsible/accountable for raising their children properly and with the knowledge to understand the differences between media and real life.

That last statement is truly the sticking point for this portion of this post. The video linked above is talking about the Victoria’s Secret “Pink” line, which is theoretically marketed to teens, being similar in content to their normal advertising (sensual poses, lots of visible skin, etc.). My question, though, is why is this an issue for such controversy when the clothing being marketed is intimate to begin with? Isn’t that the point? Isn’t this an expectation of a company that specializes in intimate apparel?

Taxation

The second video is even more ridiculous. Who could possibly think that additional taxation on a society that is already heavily taxed is a good idea? Further, how could anyone expect a tax on email to effectively change anything about the spam email they are supposedly trying to stop with such a tax? It is a ploy for generating additional revenue and nothing more. Spammers are not going to suddenly seek legitimate methods for sending out their emails, which means this is nothing more than a way to try to cover up an attempt to add yet another source of revenue through taxation.

Quite frankly, this “logic” is part of why our society is already over-taxed. The government/political mindset is completely and utterly ridiculous. The video goes on to mention the possibility of taxing text messages/mms messages/other electronic methods of communication. If anyone thinks this is a good idea, please enlighten me with your reasoning.

Random Side Note:

It seems interesting to me that, of every technology company, pundits and analysts always seem to say Apple is “doing it wrong” and is “failing” in some fashion. Recently it has been stories of supply shortages/cuts and speculation on whether iOS devices are losing ground. It seems to me that every week there is another new story about how Apple is doomed and is currently failing, yet the company is sitting on vast cash reserves and is consistently bringing in massive profits.

Obviously complacency could kill Apple, but every year something is refined (or even something new introduced) that makes a solid product that much better. Sure, record-breaking profits will eventually stop. Instead, it’ll be “solid profits” quarter after quarter if trends continue. My question, though, is how does someone prophesize “doom and gloom” for a company that has been consistently strong and supposedly “destined for failure” every month or so?

Refuting the Violent Video Game Myth [UPDATED]

There is an interesting article over at Mind Hacks (link here – http://mindhacks.com/2012/12/31/in-other-news-behind-the-video-game-scare/) that aids in explaining the same belief and understanding I have come to with my years of study of human behavior. Quite simply, violent media of any type is not a driving force behind increased violence in the real world. Before I delve further into this topic, I want to emphasize a couple of quotes from the article (and you can find further reading on the subject at the end of the article on Mind Hacks):

The research on the psychological impact of video games tells quite a different story from the stories we get from interest groups and the media.

With regard to violence, violent video games have been found to cause small, reliable but temporary increases in aggressive thoughts and behaviour in the lab – as have other forms of violent media, including films and the news.

But in terms of real-world violence “delinquent peers, depression and an abusive family environment account for actual violent incidents, while exposure to media violence seems to have only a minor and usually insignificant effect.”

UPDATE: Exploration Below:

Violence in media has long been a scapegoat for the media (and numerous politicians and other public figures) when attempting to identify something in a person’s behavior that contributes to their violent actions. Even recently, with the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut and the shooting in Aurora, Colorado, violent video games were called into question yet again. In each case, failure to logically examine and understand behavior leads to false accusations and conclusions by those who report on the subject.

Let’s look at a simple statistical example, and you tell me if there appears to be a correlation. There were an estimated 386.3 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants in 2011 (source). The total population of the U.S. was around 311,800,000 in mid-2011 (source). This means an estimated 12,020,883 people committed a violent crime. Now, let’s think about the number of gaming systems (Playstation 3, XBOX, and computer) sold. Obviously we do not have data on the number of specific games played on those systems, or the types of content, but looking at the sheer volume of sales of “violent” games and movies it is easy to estimate that at least a quarter of the population (and that is definitely a conservative estimate) regularly views/plays such content. That would be 77,950,000 people.

Quite frankly, if violent video games and movies were a driving factor in violent behavior, we’d see a much higher crime rate. I recommend reading the Mind Hacks article and the article over at the Observer (linked from Mind Hacks) for a more thorough look, but this sums it up nicely:

The verdict from the now considerable body of scientific research is not that video games are a new and ominous threat to society but that anything in excess will cause us problems. The somewhat prosaic conclusion is that moderation is key – whether you’re killing aliens, racing cars or trying to place oddly shaped blocks that fall from the sky.

The Wolf [CYOA 01]

This is an experiment with a new fiction series where you, dear reader, will determine how the story unfolds. Modeled loosely after the old “choose your own adventure” books, each piece in this series will feature a poll that asks you to vote on what course of action to pursue. Whichever option gets the most votes will be the way the next part of the story unfolds.

Part One, Demons, is located here: LINK

The Wolf

Jack closed his eyes and contemplated everything the Angel said. The silence was interrupted by the anguished howl of a wolf somewhere in the distance. The beast seemed to be calling out to him as though yearning for a companion, and Jack made his choice almost instantly.

The Angel seemed to know his choice without a word being uttered; “The wolf has long been misunderstood in lore. A noble beast indeed. Follow me.”

As they stepped outside Jack noticed the rain had all but stopped. Everything was eerily quiet, save for the occasional howl being carried to their ears on the wind. The air was quickly getting colder as they moved further into the forest, and Jack was glad he had thought to at least slip on an overcoat as they left the warmth of the cabin.

They entered a clearing a few moments later, with a small stream blocking their path. Without warning a large feline appeared before them, its eyes seeming to glow orange in the pale moonlight. Jack crouched, slipping a knife from the sheath on his calf and preparing to defend himself.

“There will be no need for your weapon, Jack,” said the Angel as he moved toward the feline, “You will find Eve quite docile.”

As he spoke the great cat slowly changed forms, morphing into a young woman. Jack watched in awe, marveling at the scene unfolding before him. After a moment he realized his mouth was still open, gaping first at the sight of a large cat and then awestruck by her beauty, Regaining his composure he averted his eyes as she finished the transformation, respectfully giving her a moment of privacy as she pulled clothes from a small bag and slipped into them.

“As I mentioned already, I serve two houses. Eve is the last of the Clan O’Lear. Your two houses are bound forever in this world, and you must learn to rebuild that which has fallen.”

Jack turned to face the Angel, “No more cryptic phrases or stories. Tell me, what is going on here? Who are you? Who is she? Hell, who am I?”

This time it was Eve who spoke, “Perhaps the simplest answer is also the most difficult. Our bloodlines go back thousands of years, predating any written history. We are, in the most simple of explanations, demon hunters. Throughout the history of the world there have been forces at work attempting to destroy humanity in one sense or another, and our families have been charged with protecting mankind. I realize that opens a lot of other questions, but the basic idea is that the Angel, here, is our guide.”

As she spoke the Angel started an incantation. Mist swirled around them, seeming to appear and thicken as his voice rose. Lightning flashed, and thunder shook the ground. Without warning, a blast of energy struck Jack, raising him off the ground and sending tendrils of electricity in all directions. Jack tried to scream but his voice escaped him. As suddenly as it appeared the blast was gone, dropping him to the ground gasping.

Jack could feel a surge of power flowing throughout his body. It seemed to invigorate him, and the chill of the night air was replaced with an inner warmth that seemed to radiate outward. Slowly he stood, not understanding what had just transpired. He felt different, almost as though a veil that deadened his senses had been lifted.

As Jack regained his composure Eve lunged at him, a dagger having appeared in her hand. He sidestepped her thrust without thinking, his body seeming to move of its own accord. Eve switched the direction of her attack with supernatural speed, and yet Jack still avoided her easily.

Smiling, the Angel interrupted, “Excellent.”

Jack, bewildered, could no longer contain his anger, “What the hell!?”

“I believe it would be best if we continue our conversation back at the cabin,” said the Angel, “I owe you some answers.”

Jack could barely concentrate. Anger bubbled within, threatening to overcome his control. The only reason he left the cabin was to get some answers, and after nearly being electrocuted, then being attacked, and still not understanding any of what was going on, this bastard wanted to go back to the cabin! Couldn’t they have simply stayed there in the first place?

“Enough! We just took a nice little trek out here, supposedly so you could shed some light on what is going on, and now that you shot me with something, and she attacked me, you want me to just turn around and follow you back!? You owe me some answers now!” Jack shouted then, as an afterthought, said “And why do I feel different? What did you do to me?”

“I merely reawakened the memories and skills of your ancestors. While I admit the method of transfer is not pleasant, once you are able to access those memories that have been imparted to you everything will become much clearer,” replied the Angel, “I do apologize for bringing you here to do so, but there was a risk that things would not turn out well, in which case Eve would have been needed to contain you. I assumed having a second person invade your cabin would have made things that much more difficult.”

Jack waited, obviously expecting more. After a few moments, however, it became clear that the Angel would not provide more information until they were safely inside. Jack finally gave in.

“Fine. Let’s go back to the cabin. I warn you, though, I will not leave there again until all of my questions have been answered.”

Eve caught Jack’s arm as he started to turn, pulling the sleeve of his shirt back just enough to expose his inner forearm. Jack was surprised to see a marking, much like a tattoo, had appeared.

“The wolf…,” whispered Eve, then she let go of his arm and followed the Angel back toward the cabin.

Jack stared, dumbfounded, at his arm. Roughly the size of a dollar coin, the image of a wolf, head tilted back as though howling at the moon, emitted a faintly pulsating glow for a moment. As he watched the pulsing stopped, and the image left looked like nothing more than any normal tattoo. Jack finally turned his gaze away from his arm and toward these two strangers, making their way back up the hill toward his cabin. Ok, seriously, someone has to tell me what is going on…

What will you do next?
